Saturday August 9th Second Saturday Art Walk
The Second Weekend Art Walk in Port Angeles, August 9th, is going to be great! Cabled Fiber Studio will be celebrating the creativity of surface design artist Sue Nylander of Sequim.
Sue’s unique one-of-a-kind garments and art quilts are interpretations of numerous traditional techniques she applies to contemporary uses.
Fascinated with art history, especially Asian and African cultures, and traditionally under-appreciated fiber arts created by women, she has made a life-time commitment to studying and sharing numerous techniques through her artwork, fashion and trunk shows, and teaching.
We are very pleased to host her one woman show and tell. Come early to view her works of wonder and join us for the reception at 6:30.
These are not your grandmother’s cross stitched pillowcases!
Feiro Marine Life Center and Cabled Fiber Studio Launch Workshops to Support Sea Star Citizen Science ProgramsClallam County Fair
Inspired by the Japanese art of amigurumi, Cabled Fiber Studio and Feiro Marine Life Center have started a new partnership to raise money for education and citizen science programs at Feiro through the creation of fiber sea stars, crabs, jellies, octopus, etc. Fiber artisans can stop by Cabled Fiber Studio for patterns and donated yarn to make the creatures. Final products can be donated to Feiro to be sold in the gift shop. This effort was inspired by one of Feiro’s volunteer naturalists, who has been knitting sea creatures and donating them to Feiro for resale. This partnership will expand that effort, and provide additional learning opportunities for those interested in knitting, crocheting or wet/needle felting in the amigurumi style and sea life.
This effort will kick off with a hands-on workshop on making wet felted sea stars held August 7th from 6pm-8pm at Cabled Fiber, 106 N Laurel Street. The cost is $25 per person, and includes materials. Kicking off the class, Helle Andersen, Citizen Science coordinator, will speak about sea stars and the epidemic of wasting disease, followed by instruction from Cabled Fiber educators\in making sea stars using wet and needle felting techniques. Join with artist Lauralee DeLuca to learn the basics of making a piece of "fiber art". You don’t have to be an artist to make something great!
Needle felting is limited only by your imagination. Once you learn some basic techniques, needle felting can be used to add embellishments to your knitted garments or woven fabric or as a stand-alone work of art. In class, you will have an opportunity to make your own ideas come alive with fiber. We will cover basics of both flat and 3-D felting.
